Madan Mohan Telugu font is an ambitious project developed by Microsoft and IIT Madras. It holds the distinction of being India’s first ever open source typeface, available for free to all software developers and designers in the country. Probably its most important feature is that it will be available for use free of cost. The letterforms in it are designed to be aesthetically pleasing to human eyes, so much so that it has been approved by Bharata Muni, a famous Sanskrit scholar during the 10th century AD. As such, this font would not only help users find texts easily but also help them learn without going through years worth of research about scripts from the past few centuries. This font was designed in a way that it can be used in a number of languages, not just in Telugu. This makes it almost the 'international' font for all South Asian languages. The fonts have been designed to be free and usable under the terms of the GNU General Public License, which is a free software license with terms that allow its use by any person, anywhere. In this way, the fonts are available to whoever wants them for free. In 2010 Microsoft made an announcement about "Madan Mohan Telugu Font" on its website. In this announcement, Mr. Imran Siddique, Microsoft’s Executive Director for Telugu stated that the "Madan Mohan font project attempts to create an open source font that can be used by developers for all South Asian languages". Next year, in 2011, the task of designing this font was entrusted to Professor T.K. Rama Rao and his team at IIT Madras. The fonts were completed in 12 months time and were released on 27 December 2011. Mr Siddique further added that "There are several fonts available but they are proprietary and can only be used with specific software". The word 'Madan' means 'lucky' or 'good' in Sanskrit (from where Telugu comes). Similarly, 'Mohan' (from where the name 'Madan Mohan' comes) means a great sage, or a 'very auspicious person' in Hindi and Urdu. "Madan Mohan Telugu font" was made free to use over the Internet and through software. The source code of the font is also available on GitHub. The "Madan Mohan Telugu font" project was developed in close association with IIT Madras’ Software Product Design group under Professor T. K. Rama Rao and his students in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Madras. The project started off as a class project in 2009, when Professor T.K. Rama Rao was teaching computer science at IIT Madras. The objective of this project was to design a set of fonts that can be used by software developers in India (and South Asia) to render the various scripts used in the different languages of South Asia. A script is a collection of letters which are bound together by a common language to express one's thoughts, feelings and ideas. In other words, it is a unique character set, or an alphabet. The fonts have been designed to be free and usable under the terms of the GNU General Public License, which is a free software license with terms that allow its use by any person, anywhere in the world. cfa1e77820
